Denmark, a country known for its fairy tales, colorful Lego bricks and cycling culture. This unique country is the most south Scandinavian country and considered to be one of the happiest countries in the world. 

Danish Landscape

Denmark is located in Northern Europe and has only one land border, which is with Germany. The reason for having only one land border, is due to the fact, that Denmark consists of a peninsula called Jutland and various small islands in the Baltic sea, which are referred as the Danish Archipelagos. Denmark’s capital is Copenhagen, which is also the largest city in the country. The city transformed itself from a Viking fishing village into a must visit place for tourists. In case you are travelling to Copenhagen, do not miss the chance to visit the colorful Nyhaven, a former commercial port that is now known for its many restaurants and bars. Additionally, if you fancy some action, the Tivoli Gardens are the right place for you. This amusement park is located only a few minutes away from the City Hall and Copenhagen’s central station, making it extremely accessible for tourists. If you need a break from the city, make sure to visit Elsinore’s castle Kronborg. This castle makes part of the UNESCO’ world heritage sites and is one of the most important Renaissance castles of Northern Europe. Additionally, castle Kronborg is considered to be the setting of William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.  

Industry in Denmark 

The Danish economy is very competitive and developed. Furthermore, the Danish economy is known to be a mixed-welfare economy, meaning that it combines aspects of capitalism and socialism. Additionally, the country’s economy supports high-living standards, which can be seen in Denmark’s high per capita gross domestic product (GDP). Denmark’s economy focusses primarily on the service industry, such as trade and transport services. Moreover, other significant industries are manufacturing, energy, agriculture and animal production. One of the world’s leading logistics and transport companies is the Danish company Maersk. This company is known to be the largest container ship and supply vessel operator of the world, with operations in 130 countries. In addition, Maersk is also operating in the energy sector, through the exploration of oil and gas, as well as the production. Another important company in Denmark is The Lego Group. This toy producing company is worldwide known for its colorful and interlocking bricks and considered to be the largest toy company by revenue in the world.

Danish fairy tales

Thanks to the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, Danish literature became world-wide known. This author is best known for its many fairy tales, with themes that exceed the reader’s age and nationality. For this reason, most of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales have been translated into more than 125 languages, making them still known in the popular culture. Andersen’s most notorious fairy tales include Thumbelina, The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Nightingale and The Snow Queen. However, his most famous fairy tale is certainly The Little Mermaid. This fairytale has been adapted many times by the media, including an animated film by Walt Disney Animation. Furthermore, a statue was dedicated to the fairytale of The Little Mermaid. The bronze statue depicts a mermaid that is becoming a human and it can be found in the Langelinie promenade in Copenhagen. Additionally, the statue is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the city and a symbol of Copenhagen. 

Air Traffic in Denmark 

Copenhagen’s Airport Kastrup is the main international airport of the city and the busiest airport of the country. In 2018, the airport Kastrup handled almost 30,3 million passengers. Another significant airport in Denmark is Billund airport, which is located in the middle of Jutland and handling more than two million passengers yearly. Furthermore, Billund airport is located close to Legoland Billund, one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country. Next to these significant airports, Denmark offers many small airports that are distributed throughout the country.
