Ile de Ré is an island off the west coast of France near La Rochelle. Joanna Symons, travel writer for the Telegraph, sums up this exquisite corner of the French Atlantic coast very well: Ile de Ré is a popular spot, especially for the Parisians who flock here every summer. This small island is made up of dunes and pine forests. Considered a French version of the Hamptons, the island is a quiet, discreet antidote, a breath of fresh air from city life. What would you think of flying to the Ile de Ré airport in a private plane?

Locations and activities

The island is known for its harbor towns and villages, long golden beaches and well-marked rural cycle paths that will have you winding your way through vineyards and cornfields and across the vast Atlantic horizon.
Looking for a little more adventure? Indulge in water sports such as kayaking or sailing. Try new activities such as scuba diving. For your culture, don’t miss the not-to-be-missed “Fort Boyard“. This historic fortress, formerly a prison, became famous thanks to the television series bearing its name. You can also visit the salt marshes: salt producers perpetuate ancestral techniques that have hardly changed since the Middle Ages.

Restaurants

Le Chat Botté: Located in Saint-Martin-de-Ré, this restaurant is renowned for its creative cuisine and unique flavours.
