One of the secret gems in the Netherlands, is the largest and most visited island of the Wadden Islands, Texel. It is located on the north coast of the Netherlands. Lonely Planet describes Texel’s highlights as “Sweeping white-sand beaches, wildlife-rich nature reserves, sun-dappled forests and quaint villages”.
Dunes, inundated dune valleys, a mixture of deciduous and coniferous woodland, tidal marshes and heathland will especially enchant Cyclists; enough diversions to keep you entertained for days on end. Also, explore the around 40 spectacular nature reserves on foot or by bike.
Activities on Texel island
In Texel there are many activities to do, for instance, you could go cycling or walking through the dunes or over the expansive beaches. There is also a lot of wildlife living on the dutch island, that you can discover in one of the beautiful forests. Are you looking for more adventure, Horse riding or parachuting might just be the perfect alternative. Galloping in the surf with the wind through your hair. Restaurants on the island Texel
In all seven villages of the island, you can find respectable restaurants. In those, you can taste local products like the world-famous Texel lamb meat, asparagus, fresh fish, or oysters. Another excellent way of getting acquainted with the local specialties is to visit the dinner event called “Texel Culinair”. The event takes place each year in the second week of September.
Looking for a whole menu of authentic Texel products, try the restaurant “de Kroontjes” in the village nearby the seaside called “De Koog”. The restaurant serves small dishes so that you can taste different ones.
Airport
This small grass airfield, originally constructed as a joint military-civilian facility, can only be used in good weather conditions. It is mostly flown to by small private aircraft. Although KLM scheduled tourist flights to Texel in the 30s, the airfield currently only serves flights that are private. You have easy accessibility to the different villages on the island as the airfield has its place directly in the center.
