Sylt is with 99 km² the largest North Frisian Wadden Island. It lies in the north of the Wadden Sea, near the Danish border. It lies in Germany and has 21,000 inhabitants and receives 650,000 tourists every year. The island is connected to the mainland via the Hindenburgdamm and is therefore no longer a real island. There is no road across the dam, there is only a railway available. If you want to go by car you have to take your car by train.
On the Island, you can not only cycle the dikes and get a breath of fresh air on the beach, you can also enjoy amazing food and stay in charming hotels. Sylt is Germany’s most northern and expensive holiday destination, For a square meter of building land generously 15,000 euros is paid.
Sylt may be hip and fashionable, it is still one of the most beautiful places in the north of Germany. About half of the island is protected nature and the entire island is protected as part of the Wadden Sea. Behind the beach and the dunes is a narrow strip of green for buildings and agricultural activities. Right on the long beach is the green part of the island.

This is also why a taxidriver mentioned;‘Im Sommer kommen die Neureichen, im Herbst die Steinreichen’.
The beaches are beautiful white sandy beaches. It is possible to walk kilometers over the beach. with the wind in your back. At the end you can return back by bus. Busses run generously between 5:00 and 1:00AM. Especially the southern leg of the island is relatively little visited and so it is possible to walk on the beach without encountering anybody.
